Portsmouth Harbor
New Castle (1782, 1804, 1877)
Fixed green. Height above water 52 ft.
This was one of America's first twelve lighthouses. Situated at Fort William and Mary (now Fort Constitution) the 80 foot tall wooden octagonal tower has had a number of historical visitors. George Washington inspected the tower in 1789, General Lafayette visited in 1782 and Daniel Webster was a frequent visitor. When the tower's condition became poor and had been damaged by cannon fire blasts, it was replaced in 1804. This second tower was replaced by the current structure in 1877, one made of cast-iron placed on the previous foundation.
